OUGD603 - Extended Practice - Jessy Lanza - Initial Concept & Ideas

Concept

For the concept of the artowk for Jessy Lanza’s song ‘Oh No’ a number of different conceptual avenues were concidered. The first of these is the easiest but least sucessfull and that is to use the name of the song “Oh No” or a selection of song lyrics from the song to base the whole artowork’s concept around. Although this is by far the easiest method we were advised to avoid this if possible as it can lead to a weak coceptual backing by creating overly obvious symbolism between the song and artwork.
The final avenue of conceptual symbolism that was evaluated was the urban/youthfull nature of the music. Due to the fact that the music is heavily related and applicable to youth culture a number of youthfull/urban forms of symbolism were evaluated to create the concept for the artwork. After evaluating a number of these the decision was made to progress with the skyscraper/skyline symbolistic ideas as it was determined that this effectively communicated the nature of the music.

Initial Ideas

An alternative method of physical printing of which was necessary to evaluate within the research stage in order to obtain some positives and negatives of the process is Letterpress. Letterpress as a process involves the transferring of ink from printing press to paper stock through pressure and contact. This process allows for a large variety of choices to be made with designs regarding composition and components. Typographic and abstract printing blocks can be used to create a wide range of design aesthetics through the addition of abstract shapes and typography.
