OUGD603 - Extended Practice - Jazz En Boucle - Jazz Concept Research

The final stage of research before the initial design idea generation stage was to look at a range of different reoccurring themes found within the genre of Jazz music in order to outline a number of aspects that can be taken forward to the next stage contextually.

The immediate obvious choice for this conceptual decision was to look at the instruments that are most commonly used within Jazz music, in order to identify themes that can be implemented.

The decision came down to looking at piano as a major component of jazz music, along side this there was a further look at brass instruments due to the important role they play within the music.

From this conceptual look at the instruments commonly used within jazz music two major themes of which can be continued through the design stage were identified.

The first of these came down to the form of the instruments. They offer great potential to experiments with creative and illustrative themes within the branding, centring the form of the branding to mimic any of the commonly used instruments.
The second and most crucial contextual theme identified within the instrument research were the colour of the instruments themselves. This identification of colours such as the metallic tones of the brass instruments and the ivory and black of the piano are themes of which can be used to contextually link the branding to the music.
