OUGD603 - Extended Practice - Eden Photobook - Layout & Composition

Due to the fact that the research stage had now come to an end the next stage of the design process was to begin designing. As a preliminary step to designing the editorial first it was appropriate to plan out a number of ways in which the form and composition of the editorial could look. This decision coming from an informed look at existing sucessful examples of photographic editorial and an analysis of a number classical theories of editorial composition.

After evaluating the potential use of the editorial grid theories in the research stage the decision was made that one possibility for use within the design was the Van De Graaf Cannon. This decision was made due to the fact that it help to add editorial harmony through the composition of content and so was beneficial in adding proffesionalism to the publication. The decision to not use the Villard Diagram within the design evolving from the lack of need for additional grid lines for typographic hierarchy.

An alternative layout option was considered due to an informed decision regarding the content of the publication. Due to the fact that the content of the publication featured high quality imagery of detailed fashion garments a layout that features a small bordered ‘model shot’ with a full bleed ‘detail shot’. This decision was made in order to ensure that the most important purpose of the editorial the showcase the fashion work sucessfully was achived. This is ensured by arranging the composition so that the images take president over graphic aethetic styling.
